Rhopalostylis sapida, nikau palm, feather duster palm, New Zealand palm is a palm tree endemic to New Zealand, and the only palm native to mainland New Zealand.
A slow-growing feather palm 6-10m high, with a trunk covered in grey leaf scars. It forms a smooth green crown shaft 60cm long and a crown of feathery leaves reaching 1-2m tall forming a slim silhouette, hence its common name feather duster palm.
Lilac-cream flowers are followed by oblong fruits 1cm long eventually turning red.
Height x Spread : 6-10 m x 2.5m
Position : sheltered, shaded
Soil : moist but well drained
Hardiness : sheltered , cold temperatures but does not tolerate frost.
