Metrosideros excelsa – New Zealand Christmas Tree - Pōhutukawa

A striking evergreen tree with handsome grey-green leaves and brilliant crimson, brush-like flowers in summer. Native to the New Zealand coast, Metrosideros excelsa is particularly well suited to mild coastal gardens, where it tolerates wind, salt and dry conditions once established.

It makes an impressive specimen plant and can also be grown successfully in a large container, where its naturally spreading habit can be kept more compact. Plant in full sun in free-draining soil and shelter from severe frost, especially while young. In colder areas, grow in a pot and protect during winter.

A beautiful and still relatively unusual plant for adding an exotic, coastal feel to the garden.
