The Wollemi pine was thought to be extinct - the only known remains being fossils, having existed 200 million years ago. This was until 1994 when a chance discovery of less than 100 were discovered in a deep canyon in Wollemi National Park, Australia. Every Wollemi Pine sold returns a royalty to conserve the Wollemi and other threatened Australian plant species.

Foliage : New young frond like foliage is apple green and changes to blue green as the plant grows. Mature foliage is much more Jurassic like featuring two rows of leaves on the branches, not unlike the spines on a Stegosaur's back. In the colder months the foliage mellows to a warm, bronze appearance.
Cones : After approx 9 years the tree will produce cones on the end of the branches.

Bubbling Bark : At around 5 years of age, Wollemi Pines develop tiny bubbles on their lower stems. As the tree matures this spreads up the trunk.
Polar Caps: These are unique features of the Wollemi Pine. As the pine becomes dormant in the colder months the growing buds develop a white waxing coating, thought to protect the tips and explain why the Wollemi has survived many ice ages!
